Hi! Welcome to Place Matters. I am Tim Cresswell, a geographer and poet living and working in Edinburgh, Scotland. I have spent my life thinking about and writing about place in an academic context. You can find out more about my books here. In this Substack, I use this experience to write about place in different ways for a broader audience (you!). Place is central to all of our lives. We have good places and bad places, inclusive and exclusive places, just and unjust places, sustainable and unsustainable places. Making places is how we exist in the world. They are fundamental to who we are.
The aim is to write short commentaries on place issues every two weeks - introducing the reader to key issues in the ways we make the Earth our home - a place worth living in. There may be occasional guests, podcasts, book reviews, comments on movies, music, novels, and poems. Who knows?
